SPF or BFF? How to choose and apply the right sunscreen protector

Let’s talk about sunscreens. Did you know that sun is the main external cause of aging? Yes, my loves this is totally right. The #1 reason why the skin shows signs of premature aging is due to sun exposure. UV rays destroy collagen, create inflammation and damage the DNA of your skin cells. The UV rays that we are exposed to on the earth’s surface consist of UVB and UVA photons (energy). The shorter wavelength UVB rays don’t penetrate deeply into skin; they cause significant damage to DNA and are the primary cause of sunburn and skin cancer. The longer wavelength UVA rays penetrate the deeper layers of skin, where they produce free radicals. UVA exposure has been linked to premature aging of the skin and immunologic problems. This is why I really don’t mind being pale and try to avoid unnecessary exposure to the sun and UV light.

As a skin care expert and esthetician, I had to spread the word and help you to understand the importance of protecting your skin. So, let’s talk first about our BFF  (the sunscreen protector) and try to comprehend how they work. I have to admit that reading a sunscreen label is confusing and some of us just don’t know which one is better. We let ourselves be guided by fancy words and numbers in the package that we believe we understand but do we really know what it means? Let’s clear up some doubts …

WHAT IS THE SPF? This is the acronym for Sun Protection Factor (Sunscreen Factor). It is an index that indicates the ability of sun protection against UVB rays. However, this index does not indicate the level of protection from UVA rays that is also very damaging to the skin. The number goes from 2 (minimum protection) to 50+ (maximum protection). Dermatologists usually recommend a minimum of 30 SPF.

Recommendation:Look for “broad spectrum” sunscreens that protect from both UVB and UVA and that offers at least 30 SPF. In the U.S. market, this requires that the products contain a good amount of zinc oxide, avobenzone or titanium dioxide.

How to protect your skin from sun damage

Here are some important tips to protect our fair skin from sun damage

1.Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. Make sure it is water resistant and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. Other types of sunscreen may help prevent sunburn, but they will not protect against skin cancer.

2.Use a lip balm or lipstickthat contains sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.

3.Apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes beforegoing outdoors.

4.Reapply it every 2 hours. If you are having fun swimming or sweating, then you need to reapply every hour instead.

5.Limit sun exposure. The sun’s rays are the most intense between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Practice the shadow rule: if your shadow is shorter than you, you should find shade.

6.Wear protective clothing. It doesn’t have to be boring! Add glamorous pieces to protect your arms, neck, scalp, and ears. A cool protective outfit could include a long-sleeved shirt with graphic prints or patterns, long pants, and a fashionable hat.

7.Always wear sunglassesthat have 99% to 100% UV absorption to protect your eyes and the skin around them.

8.Avoid tanning beds. They can cause more damage to the skin than sun exposure.

FAQ and my Favorites!

Ask, and you shall receive! I talked about this post on my Instagram yesterday and got great feedback, questions, and concerns about this topic. I am so excited (yay) to include this section on my blog to answer you all and share my knowledge, your comments, and opinions to learn more about the importance of using the right sunscreen protector.

@claudia1mendoza “I apply my sunscreen protector in the morning before I go out and put my makeup on, but I heard that sunscreen needs to be reapplied after a couple of hours?”

A- You’re totally right. If you’ve got full makeup on, there is a great solution to that. Apply SPF-infused mineral powders. They have a natural sunblock built in them (usually a minimum SPF 20). Keep one in your handbag and dust it on your skin throughout the day to mattify your skin and provide more protection. I personally use the Supergoop! 100% Mineral Invincible SPF 45 Setting Powder and it is an awesome option to protect your skin and look gorgeous all day!

@nathavald “What sunscreen protector do you recommend to buy? What would you recommend to fade dark spots? Is Vitamin C good to lighten up the skin? Where can I buy it?

A- My absolute favorite of all times is the Clarins Sunscreen Multi-Protection Broad Spectrum SPF 50. I love it because it has great ingredients, has a broad protection and does not leave that greasy sensation on my face. For body I recommend the Neutrogena Ultra Sheer® Dry-Touch Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 100+. I also recommend getting a treatment to remove and fade dark spots. I offer chemical peel packages that will make you look awesome in a couple of weeks. You can click here to learn more about the treatments I offer. Vitamin C is a great ingredient to brighten up your skin and fade dark spots. Serums with a high percentage of Vitamin C are a great option to help your skin. For example, the Murad Advanced Active Radiance Serum is a good option.

@makeupbyorivate “I need a sunscreen protector for oily skin. Can you recommend me one?

A- My absolute favorite for oily skin is the EltaMD UV Clear Broad-Spectrum SPF 46. The oil-free formulation is also amazing for acne prone skin, rosacea, sensitive and hyperpigmented skin.

SPF o BFF?

Vamos a aclarar algunas dudas …

@ nathavald dice: “¿Qué protector solar recomiendas comprar?

@monicamogollon – “Mis favoritos son Heliocare y La Roche-Posey”
